Ugly Radio Rebellion feat. Ike Willis performing the music of FRANK ZAPPA

  • 18+

2 sets
genre-crank some frank

Ike Willis is an American singer and guitarist who was a regular sideman for Frank Zappa, first joining Zappa's band for the fall 1978 tour and remaining in the band for several years. He did not tour with Zappa in 1981 and 1982 for personal reasons, but returned to touring with Zappa for his final two tours in 1984 (which Zappa intended at the time to be his final tour) and 1988. He currently tours with the Frank Zappa tribute bands Bogus Pomp, Ossi Duri, Project/Object, Pojama People and Ugly Radio Rebellion. He's also performed several times with the Brazilian Zappa cover band, The Central Scrutinizer Band, The Muffin Men, and with the Italian band Elio e le Storie Tese. Additionally, he has appeared multiple times at the annual Zappanale Festival in Bad Doberan, Germany. He is most recognized for his involvement in Zappa records such as playing Joe in Joe's Garage, providing vocals on Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is, and The Man from Utopia, and as the title character and narrator in Zappa's off-Broadway-styled conceptual musical Thing-Fish.

Presently, the life story of Ike Willis is being written by a group of friends and fans calling themselves The Project Scrutinizer.

ST. PAUL AND THE BROKEN BONES

  • 18+

9 doors/10 show
$8 advance ticket, $10 day of show

Paul is a young man who began wailing straight out of the womb, and most folks would agree that he hasn’t stopped since. “Oh what a set of lungs that child has,” they’d say, “he must be destined for something special.” Not wishing to disappoint, and being a good young southern boy, Paul began singing in church, stretching those vocal cords with an eye toward becoming a man of the cloth. As it turns out, however, the cloth didn’t appreciate young Paul’s affinity for dirty jokes, Prince, and Tom Waits, and he was inclined to search elsewhere for co-conspirators. He began plying his trade with whomever would have him, and happily, folks were mostly impressed by his efforts. With a wholly re-imagined take on the sounds he’d grown up singing and seeking, Paul recruited a rag-tag band of loveable weirdoes, visionaries, and hacks to help him harness the power he now knew he possessed. Under the nom du guerre St. Paul and the Broken Bones, the motley crew roams the countryside looking to get cabooses shakin’, faces meltin’, and brothers and sisters everywhere testifyin’.

JASON ISBELL + WIDOWSPEAK + TIM EASTON

  • 18+

8pm doors & 9pm show
$15 advance ticket, $17 day of show

Tim Easton will be opening
http://www.timeaston.com/

Southeastern is not a record Jason has made before, and not simply because the glorious storm and drama of his band, the 400 Unit, is absent. They will tour together; it’s not a break-up record, not an album of dissolving, but, rather, songs of discovery. And not at all afraid, not even amid the tears.
Which is to say that he has grown up.
That it has been a dozen years since he showed up at a party and left in the Drive-By Truckers’ van with two travel days to learn their songs. And then taught them some of his songs in the bargain.
Jason Isbell’s solo career has seemed equally effortless, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (2009), through Here We Rest (2011) and last year’s Live From Alabama. Loud records, unrepentantly southern, resplendent with careful songwriting. Songs which inspire and intimidate other musicians, and critics.

Widowspeak is an American band comprised of Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas, known for its dreamy, western-tinged take on rock and roll. The outfit formed in 2010 and released two singles in 2011 (Harsh Realm, Gun Shy) followed by a debut album (self-titled) in the summer of that year, all on Brooklyn label Captured Tracks. Widowspeak was praised for its reverential spaciousness, Hamilton’s haunting voice, and Thomas’s spindly, Morricone-esque guitar lines; both drawing on 1950’s pop ballads and 1970’s psych, creating languid call-and-response melodies. The band then toured extensively, wearing in their warm, nostalgic sound.

REVIVAL an allman brothers experience

  • 18+

REVIVAL captures the live sound with the same fire and intensity of the early, original line-up of the ABB.

9pm doors, 10pm show
2 full sets of ABB
$10 advance ticket, $12 day of show

Lefty Williams-Guitar/Vox
Benji Shanks-Guitar
Ron Roper-Keys/Vox
Bryan Hall - Bass/Vox
Steve Saunders-Drums/Vox
Preston Holcomb-Drums

BIO - Starting with a Monday night, ”one-night only”, house band theme jam led by band-leader Jason “Lefty” Williams, REVIVAL was formed in the Spring of 2010 in Atlanta, GA. Not your routine tribute band, the musicians capture the live sound with the same fire and intensity of the early, original line-up of the ABB creating an unparalleled music experience.

REVIVAL boasts two of the region’s finest touring guitarists, Lefty Williams (Lefty Williams Band, Nothing Simple, Wayside Riders) and Benji Shanks (Captain Soularcat, Last Waltz Ensemble) and features Ron Roper (Tinsley Ellis, early Derek Trucks Band) on keys and vocals, Steve Saunders (Lefty Williams Band, Escape Vehicle) on drums, Preston Holcomb (The Grapes, Wayside Riders) on drums, and Bryan Hall on bass.

This stunning lineup of working musicians are all original artists, songwriters, and band leaders in their own right. Preston is an original founding member of The Grapes who performed with The Black Crowes during their infamous High As The Moon tour. Lefty and Steve are the backbone of the Lefty Williams band, recording and touring their original music across the eastern United States. Benji Shanks, founding member of Captain Soularcat, can be seen playing guitar with many of the South’s premier artists including Warren Haynes, Luther Dickinson, Ike Stubblefield, and Blackberry Smoke. Ron Roper has toured as piano and organ sideman for many of Georgia’s finest, including Tinsley Ellis, a young Derek Trucks, and Col. Bruce Hampton (Ret.) to name a few.

Given their individual schedules and workload, it’s easy to assume that REVIVAL only has the chance to play a handful of shows each year. This makes each show special and allows the chemistry of the band to stay fresh and deliver a powerful show. Staying true to the integrity and authenticity of the music, REVIVAL has a full stage setup including two full-size drum sets, professional guitar rigs, a Hammond/Leslie organ combo, and more, making the band the perfect choice for outdoor festivals, summer concert series, corporate events, college and private functions

…And local rock group Same As It Ever Was is all about defying expectations. "When we first started the band, it was definitely about the music first and foremost," founder Curtis Geren told The Daily Times this week. "We try to have some visually stimulating things going on. The guys wear costumes at every show, and we keep it Why the Talking Heads? Geren remembers watching the band's videos when he was a child, but it wasn't until his teenage years that he rediscovered the band's music again. "I respect the fact that they discovered a way to move the body and the mind at the same time," he said. "It's very conceptual and very profound music, and at the same time it gets people dancing. It's fun, very creative and very surreal at the same time. "At first, we were just excited to play the music itself, and anything else that might have come out of it remained to be seen. I think it was meant to be a really good ode to the Talking Heads, a really well-done tribute." What it's become is one of the most innovative groups and fun shows all over. Before forming Same As It Ever Was, Geren researched online and found no other Talking Heads tribute bands out there. Today, he's part of an all-star ensemble that includes his brother Grant on rhythm guitar and vocals; Taylor Hiner on bass and vocals; Rusty Davidson on keyboards; Matt Aurand on percussion; Josh Hobbs on lead guitar; Steve Corrigan on drums; and local torch singer Sarah Clapp on backup vocals. The group's music alternates between faithful recreations ("Houses in Motion," "Crosseyed and Painless") to reinterpretations ("Stay Hungry.”) - The Daily Times

Cosmic Charlie performs
2 sets of Hi-Energy Dead @ 10pm inside
9pm doors
$10 advance ticket, $12 day of show

Cosmic Charlie was born in the musical Mecca of Athens, Georgia. From its summer 1999 inception, the band has been swiftly cementing its reputation as a band that puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalogue, a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands. Rather than mimicking the Dead exactly, Cosmic Charlie chooses to tap into the Dead's energy and style as a foundation on which to build. The result is healthy balance of creativity and tradition, and both the band and its audience are taken to that familiar edge with the sense that, music is being made on the spot that night.

GEORGE PORTER JR. AND THE RUNNIN PARDNERS

  • 18+

2 sets
9 doors/10 show

George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60's and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.
