Piano Starts Here highlights the work of some of the most prolific and talented jazz composers and pianists to ever tackle the instrument, hosted and curated by pianists Tim Kennedy and Wayne Horvitz. Each performance brings together Seattle’s finest contemporary pianists to perform compositions that showcase the featured performer’s work – the Royal Room brings together a who’s who of local piano talent to play the ongoing series, featuring pianists like Ryan Burns, Marc Seales, Dawn Clement, Sumi Tonooka, Gus Carnes, Aaron Othein, and Dave Peck, to name just a few.
The blend of roots, blues, zydeco, boogie woogie and jazz apparent in the compositions of all three of these musicians screams New Orleans, but Piano Starts Here takes you south in order to highlight the variance in style among these three Louisianan composers. The Night Tripper, Longhair and James “Black Liberace” Booker all see some action during Mardi Gras, but Piano Starts Here goes further and gives them the full attention that they deserve.
